I was in the mood for some Del Taco chicken soft tacos. Mmmm, Ghetto good. Alas, we do not have a Del Taco in Midland. Actually, I don't think they are in Texas at all. So I hopped online and googled up their secret sauce.
Del Taco Secret Sauce
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon buttermilk or whole milk
1/2 teaspoon fresh lime juice
1 tablespoon buttermilk or whole milk

Mix together and there ya go. Next time I may do 1/8 cup sour cream and 1/8 cup mayo. Just because I'm having an aversion to the taste of mayonnaise lately. (no, not prego.)
Prepare chicken using a package of chicken taco seasoning, according to directions.
Fill flour tortillas with sauce, chicken, tomato, shredded lettuce and cheese.
There are no tomatoes on a chicken soft taco, you heathen.

DeleteDel taco was an offshoot. The original owner was dick naugel. And his partner stole the recipes and created del taco. Naugeles. Was big in the 80's and they are making a comeback here in California. Good shit.
DeleteDel Taco was not an “offshoot”, it was founded before Naugles by Ed Hackbarth in Yermo CA. Dick Naugles was a contractor installing equipment at the Corona Del Taco when he met Ed Hackbarth and later became a business partner. I grew up in Barstow and went to high school with one of Ed’s kids. The original was called Casa Del Taco and when they moved to Barstow they dropped the Casa. On another note, the original Yermo location was actually started by a mexican family and was called Taco Tia. Uh Oh, now I’ve got your attention!

ReplyDeleteMade this tonight with the proposed secret sauce sour cream alteration. It was essentially indistinguishable from DT's chx soft tacos. The one addition I did make (and which I always order in addition on my DT CST's) was the retail version of their chipotle sauce. I just discovered last week that the sauce manufacturer Herdez's Chipotle Salsa Cremosa is essentially DT's chipotle sauce.
Gave my home attempt tonight a proportional dose of this sauce (I used some larger tortillas than one would receive from DT, so I increased all ingredients appropriately) and as I described above, it was nearly indistinguishable from the offerings from DT, if not better.
Also added some sweet onion and left out the cheese because I forgot to grate some by the time the tacos were ready, and did't want to expend the time to make it happen. I'd add the cheese next time, just for additional yums.
